The winds of Senj

At less than 5kms from our campsite, Senj was more than handy for grocery shopping, picking up a Dutch newspaper (!) or enjoying a dinner of local seafood, and it even has its own castle/fortress.

Senj, inhabited since the prehistoric times, is famous for its wind (known as the bura)! There is constantly a strong northeast wind blowing and it seems that back in the 1500s the local "guerillas", the Uskoks, took advantage of these winds in their ongoing war with the Ottomans. Depsite being checked on land, they were pretty successful out on the sea operating in small groups in fast boats.

One of the most notable Uskoks was Ivan Lenkovic, and it was he who built the imposing Nehaj Fortress you can see here below.
