Novigrad - Dalmatia

Novigrad itself is an historic little fishing village situated on a narrow inlet of the Novigrad Sea (an arm of the Adriatic Sea) in the region of Dalmatia. With about 2,000 residents it is famous for its shellfish.

The village has managed to remain pretty uncommercialised and retains its charming Mediterranean architecture and part of its original fortifications, with the ruins of the old fortress looking out from a steep hill above the village. There are no large shops or supermarkets, and really only about 2-3 small cafes where the locals seem to sit all day with a coffee (or beer), a newspaper, and watch the world go by. Whilst we were there the "boulevard" was undergoing a major facelift, so maybe the village is expecting bigger things - hope not, would be a shame if it lost its current charm.

We did scramble up the steep rocky path (more like a goat track!) to the ruined fortress one very hot afternoon, and were rewarded with lovely views out over the bay and the village itself.
